Maudsley Approach: Family Based Treatment
for Eating Disorders with Adolescents

with

Kara Fitzpatrick, Ph.D.

Eating disorders have long been considered to be chronic and intractable mental illnesses that are difficult to treat. However, the introduction of Family-Based Therapy (FBT) or “Maudsley” for Anorexia and Bulimia Nervosa has changed the way we think about the treatment of these disorders. FBT has been found to be effective with children and adolescents, who have been ill for less than three years and are under age 18, with between 50-70% of patients achieving recovery after a year of treatment. FBT works to empower parents to manage their child’s eating disorder through a firm, compassionate focus on renourishment efforts. The treatment emphasizes the importance of parental efforts at renourishment, then the transition of control back to the adolescent. The importance of a return to normal development, both in eating and in the child or adolescent’s daily living, is essential for preventing relapse and founds out the end of treatment. Endorsed by the NICE guidelines as the first line of treatment for child and adolescent eating disorders.

Kathleen Kara Fitzpatrick, Ph.D. is an Instructor of Psychiatry at Stanford University/LPCH and the Coordinator of the outpatient Eating Disorder Clinic in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford Medical Center. Her research focuses on clinically applied treatments for eating disorders in children and adolescents. She has been a therapist on clinical trials evaluating treatments for Anorexia Nervosa and is a trainer and a supervisor for the Training Institute for Eating Disorders, conducting trainings on FBT around the U.S. and Europe.

Participants who have taken the six hour Maudsley workshop will be invited to attend the 10 session live "one way mirror" training where one therapist from the training will volunteer to see the client, while Dr. Fitzpatrick calls into the session, giving suggestions while the group watches the session via video.  The first 30 minutes of the training will be spent discussing the case, the session that day, and addressing the theory and techniques.  The client will then work with the therapist for 50 minutes while the team gives suggestions.  The group will discuss the session for the last 30 minutes to discuss what worked, what didn't, and why.  We will be able to go beyond just theory and technique and see how to apply it in reality.  Two out of the ten sessions will be spent reviewing video of the session and practicing the techniques to deepen the learning in Maudsley Method.

IAP can not guarantee that we will have a client or that the client will come for all 10 sessions.  If this does happen, then we will use the time as a consultation group, may have people in the training bringing in their clients for a single session, or watch videos of sessions.  IAP will make every effort to have a client coming in for the therapy and we have been able to have a client each time, so the likelihood of not having a client is very low.  Also, most attendees can not attend all 10 sessions, which is common.  The amount of 10 sessions is the same as taking a class, so unfortunately, we do not refund if the person can not make a session.  All proceeds from the training and client payments go to hiring trainers, equipment, and rent for the trainings.
